"Discipline Redefined: Why GES Appointing Deans of Discipline Isn’t the Answer”
The recent decision by the Ghana Education Service (GES) instructing schools to appoint Deans of Discipline in response to the growing concerns over disciplinary problems raises important question: is appointing such Deans the solution to the decline in discipline?
Why Appointing Deans of Discipline Isn't
the Answer"
Appointing a Dean of Disciplinary
may perpetuate the idea that discipline is solely an external imposition rather
than an internal responsibility. Teachers are likely to refer all discipline
issues rather than dealing with them, and we risk creating an atmosphere of fear and
resentment among students and teachers, hindering their personal growth and
emotional well-being.
Appointing Dean of Discipline
may provide a superficial solution that fails to address the underlying causes
of disciplinary problems. Such a measure tends to focus on control rather than
promoting a holistic approach to discipline that considers the emotional
well-being and individual needs of students. A discipline system centered
around a designated authority figure can diminish the sense of empowerment
among students and teachers.
Appointing Dean of Discipline
might lead to stigmatization and marginalization of students who are perceived
as "troublemakers." Instead of fostering an inclusive and supportive
environment, this approach could further alienate students, potentially
exacerbating the disciplinary issues.
Alternative Approaches to Discipline:
While the idea of electing a Dean of Disciplinary in
Schools is a well-intentioned response to rising disciplinary issues, it
may not be the most effective solution. However, the following
alternatives can be considered.
Integrating social-emotional learning
(SEL) into the curriculum equips students with essential
skills to manage their emotions, develop empathy, and make responsible
decisions. By prioritizing SEL, schools can create a nurturing environment that
supports students' emotional well-being and reduces disciplinary issues.
Adopting a positive behavior support
framework involves creating a comprehensive system
that focuses on prevention, teaching appropriate behavior, and reinforcing
positive actions.
In Conclusion
Appointing Deans of Discipline to address disciplinary
problems in schools overlooks the complexity of the issue and limits the
potential for sustainable solutions. Let us move beyond superficial
solutions and work towards holistic approaches that empower students and
promote a positive and inclusive learning experience for all.
